Lesson A Overview: Debunking Myths About the Workplace

Debunking Myths About the Workplace

In this lesson, you will explore common messages about “professionalism,” decide which
ones are myths, and practice using simple, clear language to talk about bias, barriers, and
expectations at work.

Many workers hear strong messages about what a “real professional” should look like or sound like. Some of these messages are myths. In this lesson, you will:

  • Read about common myths and facts about professionalism and hiring
  • See short stories from workers who corrected those myths in real life
  • Learn key words such as barrier, bias, stereotype, and expectation
  • Practice polite, assertive language to respond to unfair myths
  • Reflect on a time when you or someone you know was misjudged at work or during hiring
  • Share your ideas in a short online discussion about professionalism and culture

  • Identify at least three myths about professionalism or hiring and match them with simple facts
  • Use new vocabulary to talk about bias, barriers, stereotypes, and expectations at work
  • Explain, in simple language, how bias or perception can affect how workers are seen
  • Describe a time when you or someone you know was misjudged in a professional situation
  • Share your opinion about professionalism in a short written discussion post

In some activities, you can choose between two levels:

  • Level A: shorter texts, more support, clear tooltips for key words
  • Level B: longer texts, more new vocabulary, practice with using dictionaries and guessing meaning from context

You can change levels at any time. Choose the level that feels challenging but still comfortable for you.

Before you start, think about this question:

Type your answer here (one or two sentences is enough):

There are no wrong answers. At the end of the milestone, you can compare how your idea of “professional” has changed.
