Discussion Directions
Discussion: professionalism in different workplaces
In this discussion, you will explore how ideas of “professional” behavior can change
across workplaces and cultures, especially in online meetings.
Scenario: cameras, small talk, and “looking professional”
Alex joins a new team that works mostly online. In his previous job, cameras were usually off, people spoke only when they had something important to say, and meetings stayed very focused on the agenda.
In the new job, the manager says, “It looks more professional if your camera is always on and you smile more. When you are quiet, it seems like you are not engaged.” Alex feels unsure, because his meeting style has always been respectful and serious, not very talkative.
You will use this situation to think about expectations, perception, and fairness.
Step 1: Write your discussion post
In the discussion forum, make one post that answers these questions:
- What do you think is happening in this situation?
- How might “professional” behavior in meetings be different across workplaces or cultures?
- What is one more fair or flexible way to think about Alex’s professionalism?
Sentence frames if you want help:
- In my opinion, what is happening is…
- In some workplaces, “professional” means…, but in others…
- I think a more fair way to see Alex is…
Try to use at least one word such as: expectation, perception, stereotype, barrier, bias, assertive, misjudge.mfortable. You only need to read one version now. You can always come back later to try the other one.
Step 2: Responding to your peers
After you post, read at least one other person’s response. If you feel comfortable, write a short reply (2–3 sentences).
Helpful frames for replies:
- Thank you for sharing. One thing I noticed in your post is…
- I agree with you because…
- I see it a little differently. In my experience…
- Your point about [word] helped me think about…
