Milestone 3: Overcome Professional Barriers

Milestone 3: Overcome Professional Barriers

In this milestone, you will take an honest look at the “invisible walls” that can make work and job search feel harder than they should be. You will learn to tell the difference between unfair myths and real barriers, see how other workers have overcome challenges, and practice talking about your own experiences in a clear and professional way.

By the end of Milestone 3, you will be able to:

  • Recognize common myths about professionalism and hiring and compare them with simple facts
  • Use new vocabulary to talk about bias, barriers, and expectations at work
  • Learn from real worker stories and notice how they describe challenges and solutions using the STAR structure (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
  • Start shaping your own story about a challenge you faced and how you responded, to use later in interviews and applications

Lesson structure and time recommendations:

Lesson A – Debunking Myths About the Workplace (online, self-paced)
You explore everyday messages about “good workers” and “professional behavior,” and decide which are myths and which are closer to facts. You learn key words like barrier, bias, stereotype, and expectation, and reflect on a time when you or someone you know was misjudged. You also join a short online discussion about how professionalism can look different across cultures.
Estimated time: 120 minutes

Lesson B – Barriers and Breakthroughs: Real Worker Stories (online, self-paced)
You read three short worker stories at your level (A or B) about people facing barriers like language, education, or tech skills. You see how they took action, what changed, and how they tell their stories using STAR. You practice resilience vocabulary (persistent, proactive, resilient, adapted), reflect on which story feels closest to your life, and share one insight in a short discussion.
Estimated time: 120 minutes
