Record Your Answer – “Tell me about yourself”

Suggested time: 10–12 minutes
In this assignment, you will record a natural answer to the interview question “Tell me about yourself.” Use your prep sheet as support, but focus on speaking clearly and confidently, not on reading a script.

Before you record, take 1–2 minutes to look at your Mock Interview Preparation Sheet.

  • Find your bullet notes for “Tell me about yourself.”
  • Remember the four “chunks” Maria uses with you:
    • Background – Who you are and your experience
    • Skills – What you usually do at work or in study
    • Achievement – One result you are proud of
    • Next step – What you are looking for now
  • Glance at your notes to remind yourself of the key ideas. Do not write a full script.

Your goal is to speak in short chunks, not in one long breath. Think: background → pause → skills → pause → achievement → pause → next step.

You may submit either audio or video.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open a recording tool (your phone, computer, or the TalentLMS recorder if available).
  2. Start the recording and imagine the interviewer is asking: “Tell me about yourself.”
  3. Use your notes only as support. You may glance at them, but do not read full sentences.
  4. Speak for about 30–60 seconds.
  5. When you finish, stop the recording and listen/watch one time.

Important: It is okay if you make small mistakes. This assignment is about true speaking readiness: can you explain your story in a clear, professional way without reading?

Maria reminds you to chunk your responses instead of saying everything at once. As you speak, try to:

  • Start with a short background sentence (who you are and your experience).
  • Pause for a moment.
  • Say 1–2 sentences about your main skills or daily work.
  • Pause again.
  • Share one short achievement or result.
  • Pause again.
  • Finish with your next step – what you are looking for now.

Short pauses between these parts will help you sound calmer, more organized, and more professional.

Listen or watch your recording once and check:

  • [ ] I used the four chunks: background, skills, one achievement, next step.
  • [ ] I spoke in short sentences and used small pauses (I did not rush).
  • [ ] I used my notes as support, but I did not read a full script.
  • [ ] My answer is about 30–60 seconds long.
  • [ ] My tone is respectful and professional (no slang, no negative comments about people or past jobs).
  • [ ] I can imagine saying something similar in a real interview.

Step 4 – Submit your recording

When you are satisfied with your recording:

  1. Save the file on your device.
    • Audio formats: MP3, M4A, WAV
    • Video formats: MP4, MOV (or other common format)
  2. Upload your audio or video file to this assignment in TalentLMS.

If you have technical problems:

  • If the upload does not work, write a short note in the text box explaining the problem.
  • Keep the file saved on your device so you can show or send it to your instructor later.

Mindset reminder

This is practice, not a performance. The goal is progress, not perfection.

By completing this assignment, you are:

  • Testing your real speaking confidence for “Tell me about yourself.”
  • Practicing how to chunk your answers, just like you did with Maria.
  • Getting ready for live mock interviews in the next lesson.

Take a deep breath, glance at your notes, and give your best honest answer.
